Hello! I'm Lisa 👋
and I want you to have a free print from my "Time Travel Butte America" collection. These TIME TRAVEL photographs combine historical images with today.
Recognized & Trusted By:
"Lisa is a photographer whose 'time travel' photos are the perfect combination of historic Butte scenes intertwined with present day."
Tracey Thornton, Journalist
The Montana Standard, Butte
Lisa "has found a unique way of capturing Butte’s history by taking photos she took today and combining them with photos from the past...she retakes photos shot nearly 100 years ago and melds them together as one to give an interesting then-and-now perspective"
John Emeigh, Journalist
KXLF Butte
"It's really exciting to see this melding of the two...To see the street scenes, and to see how much has changed and how little has changed."
Aubrey Jaap, Director
The BSB Archives
The morning air was filled with smoke.
And as I turned onto Main Street, I said aloud, "NO!"
It was the morning the M&M caught fire.
The entire city was mourning the loss of such an iconic, historic building.
But the M&M was more than just a structure of brick, wood and metallic doors.
It was a place filled with memories, stories and sticky floors on St. Patrick's Day.
Its walls echoed more than a hundred years of 2:30 am omelets from the after-hours crowd.
And in the days following the loss of the M&M, I knew I had to continue the time travel series I had experimented with.
Not just because I enjoyed it, but to capture our history now, before the loss of another icon.
I tried to photograph the M&M in 2021 for this project.
But?
It just didn't work.
Something was off.
I wasn't sure why.
And so I continued to photograph other locations, but with the M&M in the back of my mind the entire time.
And then...DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!
The M&M sign was put back up on St. Urho's Day of this year.
And so I decided this would be the perfect time to create a time travel image of the M&M, and create a collection around it.
Introducing The "Iconic Butte" Time Travel Collection
Each image combines a historical photograph with a 'today' photograph
Of course there are many more icons in Butte!
But these four represent:
1. The tenacity of being "Butte Tough" - The M&M Rising Again.
2. Going BIG in all things - The Elk of 1916.
3. The impact Butte had on the world during WW2 because of our copper mining - The Original Headframe and Marcus Daly.
4. The luxury and decadence that drew people like Charles Lindberg and Thomas Edison to Butte - The Hotel Finlen, Thornton and Acoma.
There are layers of stories, layers of time in each of these iconic buildings, street scenes and statues.
And each time we imagine what it must have been like, or hear stories of yester-year from different generations?
It's like we travel through time.
First, I find historic images of interest from the Butte Archives, Library of Congress, or other sources.

Next, I trace the major lines of each structure with a sharpie onto a transparency.

Then, I walk the scene, holding the transparency up, until I reach my final destination where all of the structures line up with the original photo.

Finally, I photograph the scene, and meld the “today” photo with the historic image in Photoshop.

Give yourself permission to be bold and larger than life.
It's not "why," but "why not?"
Why NOT go camping in the snow with no propane?
Why NOT wear red lipstick #79?
Why NOT build a 7-story-tall elk statue clad in copper for the 1916 Elks Convention in Butte, America?
Quit questioning yourself. Just DO.

"Her work is stunning and shows the progression of time in a very impactful way... She also captured the essence of the Butte Mining disaster in her 2017 work where a child with a candle took the place of every miner that died that day."
Jessica Shuman, Curator
Gold Rush Art Gallery
"Amazingly, her work helps us appreciate our hometown more than we already did. Most of us never knew that was possible. At least I sure didn't..."
Lisa "is so much more than a photographer. She is also so much more than an artist. In a way, her work serves as a vessel for us to travel back in time...her work perfectly blends Butte of today, with Butte from yesteryear..."
Bill Foley, Writer & Podcaster
The ButteCast with Bill Foley
"A trailblazing photographer redefining the field not just by adhering to its foundational principles but by innovatively expanding its scope...Wareham artfully blends history with the present in her captivating photo series."
